Kodaikanal sits high in the Palani Hills, a little over 2,000 metres above sea level, so it stays cool all year — a welcome change from the heat of the plains below.
When to visit
The hills are pleasant through most of the year. April to June is the busiest season, when families come up to escape the summer heat. The north-east monsoon brings heavy rain from around October to December, and the cooler months that follow bring crisp, clear mornings.
Getting here
- Madurai, about 120 km away by road, has the nearest airport.
- The nearest railway station is Kodai Road, on the plains below the hills.
- The last stretch is a winding ghat road — take it slowly, and plan to arrive in daylight.
What to pack
- Warm layers and a light jacket — evenings are cold.
- An umbrella or raincoat in the monsoon months.
- Comfortable shoes for lakeside walks and viewpoints.
Where to stay
Hyderspark Kodaikanal is on M.M. Street near the German Eye Hospital, about 1.5 km from the lake, with 32 rooms in seven categories, a multi-cuisine restaurant and hot water around the clock.
