The Rockfort is the great outcrop of rock that rises from the middle of Trichy, and climbing it is a rite of passage for visitors. At the top sits the Ucchi Pillayar Temple, dedicated to Ganesha.

The climb

More than 400 steps, cut into the rock, lead up through a series of halls to the summit, around 80 metres above the city. Halfway up is the Thayumanaswamy Temple, dedicated to Shiva.

At the top

From the small summit shrine the views stretch across Trichy's rooftops to the Kaveri and, on a clear day, the towers of Srirangam.

Good to know

  • Go early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the rock is cooler.
  • Footwear is left at the entrance, so the steps can be hot at midday.
  • Take water, and allow an hour or so for the climb and the view.
